Key loggers simply put are small programs that capture everything you type on your computer.
Including but not limited to:
Credit card numbers
Addresses and phone numbers
Passwords and wed sites you visit
Personal email.
How key loggers are install?
They can be installed many different ways
1. Free programs, email attachments.
2. Person or persons you know
3. Virus.
Spyware Adware.
In the good ole days these types of programs were jut more than annoyances and bragging rights for hackers.
Now hackers are money motivated and are cashing in on the information the stole by either selling it or using it themselves.
There in lies the problem. What were simple annoyances are now dangerous
Now PC users, instead o f using their computer, now they spend more time protecting it. Most people do not want to spend the limited time protecting the PC they want to be using it for production and leisure.
Most people put off the maintenance until there is a problem.
Don’t wait until it’s too late. It’s like trying to put a bullet back into a gun after firing it. The damage is already done.
Can local authorities stop this type of theft?
The basic answer is no.
Major identity theft rings are located over seas and our local authorities stop at the borders, and our National authorities are focused on big company thefts. So we are left after the theft to clean up the mess.
Keys to stopping theft.
Is there one sure way to not have key loggers on your system?
Yes do not plug it into the internet or other computer networks. This is impossible. The only other measure or types of measures is layered security. Having multiple levels reduce the inherent risk of hackers. Firewalls Virus protection software and spyware removal tools.
Not all spyware and adware tools are created equal.
A good suggestion is to have at least two working in conjunction with each other. The Keyloggers and Spyware programs are much like viruses they have many different algorithms and signature files. Not one software can or will continuously catch them all. But by having more than one you have two different programs or styles looking for the key loggers. It only takes one bad key logger to succeed in destroying your personal life.
What do I look for in a spyware or adware program?
- Usability – simple to follow operating instructions. The program should be focused on one thing and one thing only catching and stopping spyware key loggers.
- Updates- Every time a spyware is blocked another is created to go around the watchful eye of your software. Make sure it has an easy to find update button to check for updates. Even better is one that automatically reminds you or checks for updates before a system scan.
- Auto run scheduler – to run when you are not using your PC. Some Software programs use a lot of CPU and memory resources.
- Grades the severity - and gives you the option to remove or leave. (Some adware programs give false positives meaning that good programs have some values that spyware flag. You could delete some much need cookies)
Cost associated with Anti Spyware Adware and Key loggers.
They cost of purchasing can run you from FREE to 99.00 onetime fee or an annual subscription service.
I tend to shy away from absolutely free programs not that they are not any good, but it leads me to wonder why absolutely free? Are they themselves allowing certain things to run freely on your PC?
I would or do myself is have two medium priced programs between 19.99 and 39.99. When running in comparison the number of spyware/adware never matched this is what I want them to do. I do not want them continuously catching the same type I want them to be looking for ones the other does not.
Remember when protecting your PC from these types of threats any “anti” program is better than no protection. The question you should ask yourself, how much information do you have on your computer that you don’t mind losing to theft or hardware failure?
Simple Rules:
Deter identity thieves by safeguarding your information
Detect suspicious activity by routinely monitoring your financial accounts and billing statements
Defend against ID theft as soon as you suspect a problem
